A birthday wave to Hokusai

We can’t let this month go by without acknowledging the 250th birthday of Katsushika Hokusai. He’s probably the most reproduced of all Japanese artists and you can find his Great Wave at Kanagawa in everything from posters to shoes and mouse-mats to fridge magnets. His influence in Japan and in the west is enormous, so much so that Google Japan celebrated his birthday on their homepage this month.
We’ve chosen to show his equally iconic Red Fuji which remains, like Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, one of the great icons of the visual arts. Happy Birthday Hokusai!
